In music, an overtone a frequency greater than the fundamental frequency of a sound.  Yeah, we know this is some seriously nerdy stuff, but hang with us for a moment. You probably know about sound waves and the frequency is the number of times a wave repeats over a given amount of time.  If you heard a single frequency it will sound flat, dull and frankly boring. But when you play a beautiful instrument, like a flute or a guitar, a single note is actually multiple frequencies being created.  

The fundamental and one or more overtones. Those overtones are what create the rich, colorful and unique sound.
