Rise Against Hunger Meal Destination Video

Being able to make a positive difference in others' lives is one of our core values here at Overtone Agency. Whether it's serving in our local community or being a small part in something so much greater than us, we often seek out opportunities to impact others. Rise Against Hunger provides meals to children and families around the world in an effort to end world hunger by 2030. They were having a meal packing event at one of our local churches, and we got to be a part of it in a big way. Telling the story of how a meal gets from storage boxes in a warehouse to the mouth of a hungered child is one of the most significant stories we've ever told.

Discover

the Challenge

Rise Against Hunger is an international hunger relief organization that distributes food and life-changing aid to the world's most vulnerable, mobilizing the necessary resources to end hunger by 2030. Meal-packing events are a cornerstone of their efforts. Local communities come together to pack millions of meals that they distribute each year globally. Rise Against Hunger performs meal packing events to be able to distribute food around the world and one day end world hunger.

At the beginning of each meal packing event, a video is viewed by the volunteers that walks through the steps involved to pack a single meal. At the end of the video, participants often posed questions about the importance of the volunteers' efforts and where the meals go after the event. Rise Against Hunger came to us in need of a new video that answers these common questions in a manner that would inspire the volunteers. They wanted to create excitement among volunteers and show just how important they are in this step of the meal destination process.

Define

a Successful Outcome

A successful outcome would include being able to seamlessly integrate Rise Against Hunger’s footage taken from around the globe over the past few years with what we were able to capture at the meal packing event. Being able to catalog over 20 hours of footage in an organized manner for easy access for later projects would be ideal for both our team and Rise Against Hunger. We also would like to work collaboratively with the staff from Rise Against Hunger to review certain elements of the project in order to reduce the budget while still being successful.

Create

Viable Options

Leading up to the day of the Meal Packing event, our team discussed with the Rise Against Hunger team the best ways to portray how each meal gets from the event to the hands of the children receiving it. We reviewed the current footage that they provided and developed storyboard options that explained different creative approaches to telling the story. Through the storyboarding process, we presented the idea of conducting multiple one-on-one interviews with key people involved in the process. While storyboarding is often an essential step in any video project, we recognized that investing more time would be typical in this phase and it was key to successfully integrate the video from other sources. This ensured that the resulting work would be beneficial to Rise Against Hunger for years into the future.

Activate Results

After developing the script and a shot list, we gathered our team to film at both the warehouse and during the full meal packing event. We then combined it with footage that the client provided from locations around the globe in addition to a few small elements of commercially available b-roll clips. After editing, managing voice-over recording and sound design, and we delivered a video that plays in just under two and a half minutes to be shown before every meal packing event as well as serving as a banner video in its marketing and communications efforts. This video has been shown to hundreds of thousands of people at meal packing events across the country and has almost 10,000 views on YouTube and Vimeo.
If your non-profit or business is in need of a video that effectively tells a process story we would love to hear from you.
